Som du kanske ser så har jag bytt namn på min blogg från Hantverkat till Handcrafted History. Men det är samma innehåll, samma inriktning och samma jag som skriver. Anledningen är att jag vill ha en mer internationell prägel och kunna nå de som inte är svenskläsande =) Planen för bloggen är att fortsätta skriva delvis på svenska, speciellt sådant som handlar om lokala och personliga saker, men så småningom översätta och göra tutorials och beskrivningar på engelska. Så du kommer fortfarande känna dig hemma, men förhoppningsvis kommer mina andra läsare förstå mer utan att behöva sitta med google translate =)
So I´m finally coming around with a new name for my blog (from Hantverkat to Handcrafted History) and the intention is to write, at least part of the blog, in English. I know there’s many of you out there from countries other than Sweden whom are reading my blog, and I want to make it easier for you to understand all the good tips and tutorials. First up there will be some translations on old tutorials and useful tips, so hang in there!
Vad betyder Handcrafted History?
Handcrafted är den närmaste översättningen hantverkat jag kunde komma för att både internet och jag själv skulle tycka att det kändes bra. History har jag valt att lägga till av anledningen att “historia” är ett sådant härligt ord i det svenska språket; det syftar både till vår historia som i “förr-i-tiden”; allt som har med vikingatida och medeltida återskapande och utforskande att göra. Men vi säger också att vi “berättar en historia” när vi skapar; hantverkade föremål kommunicerar och berättar historier, och vi skapar och berättar tillsammans genom att göra och bära klädesplagg, dräkter, lajvkläder, historiska accessoarer. Så History får stå för både den historiska inriktningen och det berättande skapandet som jag älskar!
Hantverkat or Handcrafted History?
If you translate “hantverkat” to english it means handcrafted in the mening of (often useful and well made) artifacts and objects made by hand, by real people. It´s hard to give the word a true meaning while explaining it in English, because it is also connected to the swedish handicraft tradition with “slöjd” and the movement and tradition of “doing things all by yourself”.
In Swedish, the word “historia” (history) means both the history as in a-long-time-ago, but we also refer to fairy tales, or modern anecdotes and stories as “histories” (I´m going to tell you an amazing history) wich gives the word a wonderful double meaning; handcrafted historical objects and technics, but it also means telling stories with our hands, by choosing the design and material of the object and what we express by wearing them.
By creating fantastic things we’re actually telling stories; with our choices, with our hands, with our actions and decisions. What kind of story do you want to tell by making this beautiful thing?
